Critical Sexuality Studies, Necropolitics and Social Media

Co-Presented with Jermisha Frazier, M.Ed and Allison Grossman, LMHC

This workshop will teach participants how to employ a Critical Sexuality Studies (CSS) lens in their social media usage, with particular attention to necropolitics. It will begin by offering a high-level overview of CSS as a theoretical framework. Then, it will address the benefits of using the CSS framework and knowledge of necropolitical implications through social media intake. Presenters will provide examples of Instagram posts related to women and gender demonstrating using the CSS framework to critically analyze how these posts uphold necropolitics, therefore maintaining oppressive structures which marginalize groups. In small groups, participants will be given a particular social media post to engage the use of the CSS framework, highlighting how necropolitics spills over in often hidden ways and synthesizing the intersections of CSS, Necropolitics and everyday life as experienced through Insta. After this exercise, large group will reconvene for discussion, report backs and reflections. Lastly, the workshop will review techniques for continued engagement in CSS at home as well as through professional engagement.
